The “Active youth in the local community” project is completed!
After nine workshops held in Bjelovar, Požega, Karlovac, Nova Gradiška, Virovitica, Koprivnica, Krapina, Sisak, and Otočac, involving more than 130 young participants, and two independent youth-led projects, we have successfully completed the implementation of the “Active youth in the local community” project.

“School Garden of Otočac High School”
Students of Otočac High School carried out a project aimed at transforming an unused and overgrown area next to their school into a functional and educational school garden. The newly established garden will not only enhance the school’s aesthetics but also serve as a learning space for sustainability and environmental education.
The garden beds will be maintained by students, fostering entrepreneurial thinking and raising awareness of sustainable development. The project also aims to inspire the local community to recognize the importance of green spaces for organic cultivation and preserving native plant species in home gardens, terraces, rooftops, and public areas.
Students of the Gymnasium designed and wrote the project plan, while future forestry technicians participated in material storage, garden bed construction, and layout planning.

“EkoEkonomska” – Waste Sorting and Recycling at Sisak Economic School
Students of Sisak Economic School identified an issue in their temporary school location (after the earthquake destroyed their original building): a lack of adequate waste bins, leading to overflowing trash and improper waste disposal.
To solve the problem, they:
- Installed waste separation bins in school hallways
- Placed a larger plastic recycling container in the schoolyard
- Organized workshops on recycling, sustainability, and pollution
- Designed and distributed informational flyers on how, why, and where to recycle
Through this initiative, Sisak Economic School set an example for other schools on proper waste management and environmental responsibility.

This project empowered students to take initiative, improve their surroundings, and engage in local environmental efforts, fostering a more sustainable future for their communities.
The project was co-financed by the Central state office for demography and youth.
